PREDATORS CLASSIFICATION: School Shooters

Most violence in schools consists of students lashing out against other students or teachers. Usually no guns are involved. It is fair to say that schools are generally safe, but in 1999 Columbine became a huge exception to the rule. The Columbine tragedy occurred because two teenagers had individually detached themselves from society. Together they began to fantasize about the act of killing people at their school. The fantasy quickly crossed the line into reality and no longer a game, it became their mission in life. They planned to kill 600 people, but none of the bombs they set went off. They shot 13 people dead.

After Columbine there were 350 acts of copycat crimes, kids who were trying in one way or another to imitate what they saw. In one case, a 10 and 13-year old set off a school alarm and started shooting students as they exited their school. The Columbine shooting became the standard for kids who lived on the edge, who felt extremely disenfranchised with reality and with the norm.
