PREDATORS CLASSIFICATION: Rapists

Rapists are classified in two general groups: "stranger" rapists and domestic or "acquaintance" rapists. Acquaintance rape occurs when the victim and the predator know each other or have some kind of prior knowledge about each other. "Gentleman rapists" or "compensatory rapists" are terms that describe the rapist who is trying to compensate for his feelings of inadequacies. His intentions are not to physically hurt his victims, but rather to play out a fantasy, which involves "dating" and maintaining a relationship with his victims. Although the motivating factor for rape is usually control or power, sex none the less is a major motivator for the rapist: degrading a woman sexually in order to assert control.

Melvin C. is an example of a compensatory rapist. Abandoned by his father at a young age, Melvin was raised by an extremely controlling mother who didn't allow her son to enjoy ordinary friendships. His mother even took Melvin to his high school prom, forcing him to dance with girls that she picked out. Melvin had an IQ of 145, but this was not enough to compensate for his skewed vision of women. He quickly became a voyeur, then a groper, before becoming a rapist. He would break into a woman's apartment for their "date" and then rape her. Although he raped nearly 50 women, he was released from incarceration after only eight years.

"Rape by fraud" occurs when a person with authority, such as a therapist, uses his or her entrusted confidence to have sex with patients. Dr. Eric Hickey's research reveals that 10% of all therapists have sex with their patients.
