Arson Notes from the files of Dr. Eric
Fires fascinate arsonists, and in many cases, the fire sexually excites this type of predator.
John O. set fire to numerous houses in Glendale, California, causing hundreds of millions of dollars in damage and killing six people. He was a smooth criminal, and became famous for being able to find the point of origin of the Glendale fires. The authorities labeled him an expert, not realizing that he was the one setting the fires!
Juvenile arsonists are common. Many purposely-set fires can be linked to a persons negative childhood experiences. David began setting fires at three, burning down houses by the time he was only five-years-old. He was a sweet, quiet boy, but loved to set fires, and no one knew the reason. As it turned out, David's younger brother had died after playing with matches, at which point his father had told him, "If you hadn't played with matches, your brother would still be alive." David's arson was a signal or "cipher" for the pain he had internalized.
